AGM Events

The AGM is an opportunity to learn about the work of the Committee over the last twelve months, and hear reports from each of the Committee Officers. We encourage all Members to attend as this is both an AGM and a networking event.

ASL AGM 2024. Guest Speaker: Laura Ryan

Laura Ryan, Assistant Librarian in Special Collections & Archives at Dublin City University gave a powerful talk titled ‘Why We Should Preserve Children’s Books Even Though We Are So Old and Wise’. Laura discussed the Children’s Books Ireland’s collection and DCU’s wider children’s books collections, and why preserving them into the future via a Special Collections is so important. There was also very interesting discussion around the possibilities available through partnership and outreach work surrounding the collections.

Barbara Mc Cormack talked members through the RIAs (extensive) past present & future. Blending the physical & the digital to present …the future is focused on collective digitisation, working with partners & developing digitisation plans

‘My ancestor was sent to jail – hooray! Tony Hennessy, a professional genealogist, gave an informative and entertaining talk on the history’
of the prison system in Ireland and two genealogical sources – Irish prison records and the Petty Session Court records.

The 2021 AGM was held virtually on Monday 25th January 2021.

During a year of uncertainty in 2021, the A&SL committee provided support,
advice, a community of practice and exchange of ideas to its members. Indeed, its importance became all the more pivotal and distinctive as its members supported the search for information in a time of fast change and adaptability.

Ben Schlepper-Connolly, Digital Curator with MoLI, Museum of Literature
Ireland, gave an engaging presentation on this exciting new addition to Ireland’s literary landscape.

Our guest speaker for the event was Gemma Sexton from Dublin City Council Culture Company who gave a fascinating talk on the museum project at 14 Henrietta Street and its citizen-led ‘Dublin Connects’ initiatives.

In a follow-up event from the Section’s AGM in January, the HSLG and A&SL co-organised a summer visit to 14 Henrietta Street on Friday the 25th July 2019. Set in a Georgian townhouse, 14 Henrietta Street tells the story of the buildings’ shifting fortunes, from family home and powerbase to courthouse, from barracks to its final incarnation as a tenement house. The event was followed by networking in the Black Sheep pub

Our guest speakers for the event were Brian McMahon and Sinead Kenny of Brand New Retro, an award-winning library of vintage Irish pop culture and advertising, who gave an informative and entertaining insight into the work involved in curating their site.

A&SL AGM 2017. Guest Speaker: Kalpana Shankar, Head of School, ICS, UCD

The 2016 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Academic & Special Libraries(A&SL) took place on Thursday 16th June at the Royal Irish Academy, Dawson Street, Dublin 2 from 6 p.m, followed by refreshments. The guest speaker was Aoife Lawton, author of “The Invisible Librarian: A Librarian’s Guide to Increasing Visibility and Impact.”

The AGM took place on 17th June 2015 in the Royal Irish Academy. Our guest speaker for this event was Marian Keyes, Senior Executive Librarian at Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, speaking about the new Dlr LexIcon, the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown Central Library and Cultural Centre.

ASL AGM 2014. Guest speaker: Grace Toland of the Irish Traditional Music Archive

The AGM was held on the 18th June at the Royal
Irish Academy. The guest speaker was Grace Toland,
Librarian, Irish Traditional Music Archive, who finished her
presentation with a song, making it a memorable evening
for all who attended!
